President Edgar Lungu was recently in South Africa and was interviewed by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) before returning to Zambia. He discussed many issues but apparently most Zambians are only interested in his statement about him not drinking with Guy Scott. Most of you who have been following our facebook page since 2014 might have thought that we as Zed Corner are an Anti PF committee , which is utter rubbish because we are not Pro any Political Party. As Zed Corner we publicly praise President Edgar Lungu’s effort to use the little time he has before the next elections to improve the lives of the Zambian People. As most of you might have not known President Edgar Lungu’s trip to South Africa was all about him having a consultation from South African experts on how we can tackle the Tax issue of investors in the mining sector of Zambia. President Edgar Lungu is right. All foreign investors coming to Zambia should know that we are not going to let them come to our fertile land and rip us off. These investors should pay enough Tax to the Zambian government so that we mutually benefit from each other.According to President Edgar Lungu the mining industry in Zambia is avoiding to pay the needed tax, Zambia is losing $2 billion a year in revenue. In January, Zambia tripled open pit mining royalties to 20 percent and underground royalties from 6 percent to 8 percent. This development can be threatening to people with a short vision, people who can not look beyond the bridge of their nose will be in the fore front complaining about the 12 000 jobs that might be lost of these investors decide to pack their bags and go. Well, one thing you should consider is that Copper is a wasting asset meaning sooner or later we will run out of it, so it’s high time we started benefitting from Copper as much as we can. Let us not be at the mercies of these investors, Zambia is ours and we make the rules. Let the so called investors pay more taxes so that Zambia can benefit more. Our debts are forever increasing, so instead of us piling up the debts let us reduce our debts by increasing the taxes investors pay. Moreover 20 percent tax is not that much and mind you these investors mine other minerals apart from copper which they barely pay any taxes for. Look at the long run of things, do not just think about today, think of the next generation too. Incase you did not watch President Edgar Lungu’s interview, feel free to check it out here.
