Mongu-Kalabo Road – Zambia’s Engineering Marvel

Mongu-Kalabo Road – Zambia’s Engineering Marvel.

The Mongu-Kalabo road is perhaps one of Zambia’s engineering miracles. The Mongu-Kalabo road is a 34 Kilometers stretch built in the Barotse plains with 26 bridges across it.The main bridge measures over 1 thousand meters across the Zambezi River.

The road was built by Avic International Company (Aviation Industry Corporation), a Chinese contractor. It is believed that Avic International employed over 3-thousand local people during the 5-year period of the road works.

Meanwhile Resident Engineer from Rankin Engineering, Salah Gad described the road as an engineering marvel, which Zambia must be proud of.

Construction of the Mongu- Kalabo started in August 2011. It was launched by the Minister of works and supply Mike Mulongoti, together with then Finance minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwani with then induna Inete Akapelwa Silumbu in accompany with induna Namamba etc. The ground ceremony was held in Mongu’s Barotse plain in April but works started in August that same year.

His majesty the Litunga, Lubosi Imwiko II, fought so hard during the MMD’s Mwanawasa reign in order for the Road to be built. At first the CCC Company was engaged in 2003 but they failed to construct because of the poor method they used. In 2006 they abandoned the work and ran away. Then BRE again invited the Late Zambian president Dr. Levy Mwanawasa in Limulunga and he toured the same route and he publicly promised to bring a new contractor. Levy Mwanawasa did his best and indeed he did put this big project on paper and it was well planned. He died and left the project pending, and under the Rupiah Banda reign Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwani the son of the black bull took over the Finance ministry and he advocated for the project to start. He fought for the project and managed to find funds for the project.

The Cabinet then finally approved the project.

Mongu-Kalabo road is an old historic failed project, which started in 1974 when Dr. Kenneth Kaunda also failed to successfully construct the Road.

Thanks to the late Zambian president Dr. Levy Mwanawasa, Dr Situmbeko Musokotwani and the team who successfully managed to get the Mongu-Kalabo road project started. The PF government found everything already cooked and saved, they were just spectators.

We also urge our own Zambian Engineers to take their professions serious and be able to handle such projects. Huge projects like the Mongu-Kalabo road should be awarded to Zambians but incompetence by Zambian engineers has left government with no option but to invite foreigners to carry out such projects.
