Kitwe City Council Spends Over K17 000 On Unclaimed Dead Bodies

THE Kitwe City Council ( KCC) has this year spent K17, 374 to bury unclaimed bodies in the district.

KCC public relations officer Fridah Hamusankwa said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that 19 unclaimed bodies were buried in July this year in an effort to decongest the hospital mortuary.

Ms Hamusankwa said it is costly for the hospital to bury unclaimed bodies because the exercise is involving.

“ This year alone, we have spent K17,374 on burying unclaimed bodies. We buried 19 bodies in July,” Ms Hamusankwa said.

Ms Hamusankwa advised families to take responsibility in helping the local authority by claiming the dead bodies to help decongest mortuaries and give their relatives a decent burial.

She said the funds used to bury the unclaimed bodies can be channelled towards other areas that need urgent attention at the hospital if families claim and bury the bodies of their relatives.
