GRZ Considering Pumping Solar Energy Into Transmission
THE Ministry of Energy and Water Development says Zesco is currently conducting a study of its transmission system to determine how much solar energy can be injected in the transmission system.
In a statement availed to the Daily Mail on Friday, once the study is completed in December, a new allocation will be determined depending on the outcome of the research.
The statement says the ministry has, so far, approved the buying of 300 megawatts ( MW) into the national grid.
In this regard, the ministry has allocated 250MW for procurement through its investment vehicle, the Industrial Development Corporation ( IDC), and 50MW under the Get Fit Programme supported by the German government.
“ The ministry would like to inform stakeholders in the power sector , particularly, investors that are interested in developing on- grid solar power projects. Zesco is currently carrying out a study of its transmission system to determine how much solar energy and at what points such energy can be injected in its transmission system , without compromising system integrity,” the statement reads.
The statement says the first phase of this programme covering 100MW is already under implementation with two successful developers having already been sealed.
The second phase of the scaling up solar tender, by the IDC, with the support of the World Bank Group, will cover 150MW.
