Copper Prices Are Up Again But Zambia Wont benefit?
VICE-PRESIDENT Inonge Wina yesterday told Parliament that it may take some time for Zambia’s economy to benefit from the recovery of the price of copper on the international market.
Mrs Wina said the rising copper price does not automatically guarantee benefits to the Zambian economy.
She said this in response to a question from Nchanga Member of Parliament (MP) Wylbur Simuusa (PF), who wanted to know whether operations of mines on the Copperbelt would be restored following recovery of the copper price on the international market.
This was during the 30-minute Vice-President’s question time
Mrs Wina said the benefits may take time to manifest.
“It may take time to benefit Zambia’s economy. It is a long process and not a one-day thing,” she said.
Mrs. Wina however, failed to mention the factors that would hinder Zambia from benefitting from the prices, which are back to their usual standards.
Where is the logic here? Does Mrs. Wina think we Zambians are fools?
The various Mining Companies did not hesitate to fire workers when it was reported that the copper prices were very low but my question is why cant they re employ all the workers who lost their respective jobs due to the calamity since the prices are back to norma?
I am no conspiracy theorist but believe me our copper is being stolen from us and we are not benefitting from it. Mining of copper and other minerals is still being done behind the general public’s knowledge and only government officials and foreigners are benefitting from this.
Don’t let what is rightfully yours get stolen from you under your nose. We should all benefit from the minerals Zambia has been blessed with.
