EIGHT people have died while 28 others have sustained injuries in a stampede which happened at the Olympic Youth Development Center in Lusaka over food hampers early today.
The crowd of over 35,000 people jostled to enter the premises to receive the hampers which the Church of Christ was distributing after prayers.
In the process, six women, a man and a boy, died when the crowd trampled on them as they rushed to get a share of the food.
Police public relations officer Esther Mwata-Katongo has confirmed the deaths and indicated that several others were receiving treatment at Chingwere clinic.
She stated that five died on the spot while three died from hospitals where they were rushed for medical attention.
“The victims are among the 35, 000 from a group called Lesedi Seven; they had invited people for prayers at OYDC. The group had also organised food hampers to distribute to people. This Lesedi seven is a grouping under Church of Christ,” stated Mwata-Katongo.
